Description

We present MaRIa, an MRI-compatible piano that enables naturalistic music performance in both 3T and 7T environments. The system uses a high-speed camera to capture key movements from the back of the keyboard. Image streams are processed in real time to extract keystroke timing and velocity, which drive a sample-based piano sound engine. Auditory feedback is delivered via an optoacoustic transmission system, ensuring MRI safety and minimal interference with data acquisition. We describe the system architecture, latency characteristics, and validation of temporal precision and artifact suppression. Pilot measurements demonstrate the feasibility of capturing neural correlates of skilled motor control, auditory–motor integration, and expressive performance during active playing. MaRIa provides a versatile platform for investigating complex, ecologically valid behaviors in cognitive neuroscience.
