Description

This study examines the relationships between personality, intelligence, and musical communication in preschool children. The development of preschool children is a multifaceted process influenced by various factors. In recent years, research has increasingly shown interest in the connections between these aspects. Studies suggest that a child's personality, particularly traits such as openness to new experiences, influences their musical abilities and the way they perceive and express musical communication (Greenberg et al., 2015). Furthermore, the role of intelligence is highlighted through the relationships between fluid intelligence and working memory with musicality (Ventura, 2018). Musical communication is considered an important component of early childhood development, as it promotes not only cognitive but also emotional development. The aim of the study is to determine the extent to which these three factors interact and influence each other. Musical communication is assessed through specific tasks that capture the children's ability for musical interaction and expressiveness, including "fluency, improvisation, reflexive interaction, musical imitation, and emotion discrimination." Personality is measured using a questionnaire (Big Five Inventory, BFI-10), while intelligence is assessed through a standardized intelligence test (PITVA).

Bio My name is Emma-Victoria Syring, and I am currently working as a research assistant in the field of musical development at the Max Planck Institute for Empirical Aesthetics. I am 23 years old and in my seventh semester of studying psychology at TU Darmstadt. At present, I am writing my bachelor's thesis at the Max Planck Institute, also focusing on the area of musical development. We are currently conducting a study on musical communication in children aged three to six years. My thesis will explore the relationships between musical communication, personality, and intelligence. I will finish my bachelor degree estimated in March 2025 and will continue then with my master degree.
